› New interior concept provides generous amount of space and versatility
Singapore, 9 January 2020 – ŠKODA Singapore unveils the brand’s new compact model – the all-new ŠKODA SCALA at Singapore Motorshow 2020. With a new character, new technology and a new name, the ŠKODA SCALA completely redefines the compact car segment for the Czech brand. The fitting name ‘SCALA’ comes from the Latin for ‘stairs’ or ‘ladder’, signifying the next step forward for the Czech car manufacturer in the compact segment. The hatchback combines an emotive design with a high level of functionality and transfers the sensational design language of the VISION RS concept study into a production vehicle for the first time.
Progressive design language
Taking a bold step forward for the brand, the SCALA emphasizes on a strong brand identity. With its new sculptural shape, dynamic design features and high-precision details, the SCALA showcases the brand’s new emotional exterior and interior design language. Its perfect proportions, clearly defined surfaces, flowing lines and advanced aerodynamics make this new compact model extremely sporty and very emotive.
Distinctive features of the SCALA include an upright radiator grille, a dynamic roof line and a sporting diffuser rounding off the wide rear section. In its own style, the SCALA features an extended rear screen which conjoins in between both tail lights that bears the wordmark on the glass surface itself. Marking a new design breakthrough for ŠKODA, the SCALA is the first production model for the European market to bear the ŠKODA wordmark in individual letters on the tailgate, superseding the traditional logo.
Taking the next step forward
The SCALA is the first ŠKODA based on Volkswagen Group’s state-of-the-art MQB A0 platform. The modular transverse matrix (MQB) allows for flexible and efficient production, where engines, transmissions, steering and chassis components can all be used in a modular way and combined in various ways. MQB significantly contributes to keeping weight down thanks to SCALA’s modern breakthrough designs and the use of high-strength steel. The SCALA's interior is furnished with quality materials and great craftsmanship, the attractive design is also accompanied by perfect functionality. At the heart of SCALA’s breakthrough design is the floating infotainment display protruding from the dashboard - a whole new concept for ŠKODA. The completely redesigned instrument panel blends seamlessly with the exciting exterior design. The free-standing touchscreen display (which have so far only been available in higher vehicle segments) replaces the traditional dials and is conveniently positioned to be in the driver's immediate field of vision. In a well thought out ŠKODA ŠMART detail, the screen is mounted high on the dash for easy viewing, with a small ledge that creates an ergonomic wrist rest for operating the touchscreen.
A ŠKODA-typical abundance of space
The ŠKODA SCALA is endowed with an emotionally charged design and heaps of space that ŠKODA is famous for. Having practicality for the whole family in mind, the SCALA is equipped with ŠMART details that take the headache out of travelling. In addition to new interior trims and premium materials, the SCALA also offers a ŠKODA-typical generous amount of space for a comfortable ride, along with the largest luggage compartment in this segment, at 467 litres, which increases to 1,410 with the rear seats folded down. This is possible thanks to the comprehensive adjustments that ŠKODA has made to the MQB platform for the SCALA, which include using the longest possible wheelbase measuring 2,649 mm, allowing for a generous rear kneeroom of 73 mm. The elbowroom in the rear is 1,425 mm; at 982 mm, the rear headroom is the most spacious in this segment. The SCALA perfectly embodies the ŠKODA-typical ‘smart understatement’. By launching the SCALA, ŠKODA is taking several steps in development at once and is completely repositioning itself in the compact car segment. With a high level of functionality, smart ergonomics, as well as numerous Simply Clever features, it perfectly represents the brand’s set of values, which are suitably encapsulated by the term ‘smart understatement’. The SCALA thereby also appeals to a target group of younger, design-focused car buyers, who also attach importance to enjoying the ŠKODA-typical generous amount of space, the largest boot in the segment and great value for money.
